a dangerous game, 2025

A Dangerous Game draws on historical research into colonialism, genocide and apartheid, using a 1920s Waddington’s jigsaw puzzle of a world map as its backdrop. Hand-stitched flags of the countries relevant to this research have been affixed to vintage draughts and arranged across the puzzle. Three over-sized dice accompany the work, their dots signify the number of colonial powers, the number of genocides, and a single dot representing the only apartheid state, South Africa.

We live in an age where bias, propaganda, misinformation and disinformation across both mainstream and social media often shape public opinion. A growing chorus repeats familiar slogans: “Israel is a colonial state”, “Israel is an apartheid state”, “Israel is committing genocide”. These claims are highly contested, and while widely circulated, repetition alone does not make them true. Truth should prevail.
